Plenty of words could be used to describe having a baby: Exciting, anxious, wonderful, joyful, stressful. But if the birth event had to come down to only one word, a good choice might simply be "family." A birth, after all, helps create a family. It's the family who waits anxiously by and celebrates the news of the new arrival with hugs and phone calls to other friends and family. So Reid doctors, nurses and staff members work hard to make the birth experience at Reid a family affair. Annette Saylor, RNC, Unit Director for Reid's Mother-Baby Care Unit, said the mother is the focus of care that involves the whole family. "Fathers and siblings also need time to bond with the new family member and become educated in the care of the newborn. It also helps the mother to have the support of her family and hopefully makes her stay with us more comfortable."
ReidBabies is a popular service provided by the Mother-Baby Care Center. Newborn photos are posted on the Internet along with information supplied by their parents. ReidBabies allows friends and family, near and far, to experience through the Internet the joy of a newborn.
New Arrivals portraits are now provided by Red Barn Photography. The portrait studio is located directly across from the nurse’s station in the Mother-Baby Care Unit. In addition, a private online gallery is available on the Red Barn Photography website with additional images for view and purchase. When a baby is born at Reid, it spurs smiles all over the hospital. The family announces their good news with the playing of a lullaby over the hospital sound system. "Ohhhh, another baby!" many Reid team members exclaim as the song plays. "It's a fun thing for the family and a great reminder to everyone at Reid about one of the most wonderful aspects of our mission in health care: playing a role in one of life's sacred passages," said Reid President Craig Kinyon.
