Electroconvulsive

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a modernized and effective treatment for victims of severe or treatment-resistant depression and for some patients with mania or schizophrenia. ECT is administered under general anesthesia with supervision by an anesthesiologist, a psychiatrist and an RN.

An evaluation with an ECT-trained psychiatrist and primary care physician determines if a patient is a candidate for ECT treatment. Patient and family education about ECT and psychiatric illness is also provided.

Reid ECT services include:

  • Assessments for patients for whom anti-depression medications have been ineffective and for whom ECT treatment might be indicated. This can include patients who are suicidal and/or emaciated.
  • Individualized treatment
  • Personalized education for patients, families, agencies and caregivers regarding ECT treatments, risk and benefits

Reid's collateral services include:

  • Assessments by a psychiatrist
  • Medical clearance for treatment
  • Education for patients, families and caregivers
  • Ongoing assessments for improvement and course treatment
  • Medication management
  • Follow-up care
